An interview with Janet McNab a finalist for General Manager of the Year 2017 – Greater China

We were delighted to interview Janet McNab, the Managing Director of Sheraton Grand Macao Hotel & The St. Regis Macao, who recently became a finalist for General Manager of the Year 2017 – Greater China.

 

  1. Can you give us a brief insight into your background, education and career path? 

As a child, I grew up in Brisbane after both my parents immigrated to Australia from Italy in 1957. My Italian heritage and Australian upbringing have moulded me into the person that I am today. I feel very fortunate to have grown up around such a blend of cultures. My upbringing has helped me integrate into the working style in Asia, where I have lived now for more than 15 years.  

I fell in love with the hospitality industry in 1988 when I joined my first hotel during Expo 88 in Brisbane.  I was given the opportunity to work in a hotel that ran 100% occupancy for a 6-month period of the Expo with several VIPS and delegations visiting from around the world.This was a wonderful introduction and it drove my ambition and desire to grow further.

I began my career working in Convention Services at Sheraton Brisbane Hotel & Towers, and I worked my way up to Director of Sales & Marketing. I decided to pursue an MBA majoring in Strategic Management at the Queensland University of Technology.  Having an MBA provided me with a competitive advantage when I decided I wanted to move abroad.

 

  1. Can you share with us what you feel has been the most valuable part in your career development to date, that has enabled you to get to where you are today? 

One important lesson that I have learned along the way is that agility is the key to really accelerating in this industry. Having the ability to juggle a variety of projects and manage brands amongst a range of different markets has been paramount to success. From 2006 to 2009, when I was based in Indonesia, I was accountable for 22 properties across Malaysia, Indonesia and Brunei as Regional Director of Sales & Marketing, South East Asia for Starwood Hotels & Resorts.   

I have two personal goals, one of which is developing people, watching them grow and being part of their success and secondly, the financial success of the business that I manage. I don’t believe you ever stop learning from what happens around you or from the people you connect with throughout your career. Although my dad was not in hospitality, I would still call him my mentor. He taught me many important moral guidelines. I still hold onto them and continue to pass onto my teams today.   

 

  1. Congratulations on reaching the finalist stage of The Hotelier Awards 2017. How are you planning on leveraging this opportunity to inspire the younger generation to work harder at developing their career in the hospitality scene? 

 

Thank you very much!  I am honoured to have been nominated as a finalist.

I would love to take this opportunity to inspire the younger generation to further their careers in hospitality. I’m a nurturer, by nature. I love people as they are the ones who drive all facets of business. While the financial results are important, it is also about connecting with other individuals and making sure that they have a clear understanding of what your vision is. After all, they will be carrying that vision out for you. I also think that it is crucial to inspire women in hospitality. Throughout my career I have spent a great deal of my time mentoring other women to build their confidence in taking the next step.  I hope that by being one of the General Manager finalists at The Hotelier Awards this year, women can take inspiration from seeing more and more females taking steps into senior roles.
