An interview with Marc Bichet

We were honoured to interview Marc Bichet, the Chief Marketing Officer of GCP Hospitality, who recently became a Corporate Finalist of the Year 2017. Read on to find out what it was that contributed to his creativity and self development.

 

  1. Can you give us a brief insight into your background, education and career path?

I grew up between Mexico, Asia and Europe as my parents travelled with their work. This opportunity allowed me to have a worldly view and learn multiple languages allowing me to quickly integrate into different cultures and environments. Being exposed to such a variety fuelled my passion for new adventures, arts, music and design, which led me to start a career in music and nightlife events.

From then on, I wanted to widen my knowledge in Marketing and gain a full understanding of the industry so I undertook a Masters in marketing and communications and graduated with Honors from EFAP, The French School of PR & Marketing in Paris.

This extended knowledge of events and marketing allowed me to experience a variety of professions and industries, but hospitality was definitely the one that interested me the most. This was mainly due to my past experience working in bars and restaurants to support my studies. I love the opportunity that hospitality provides; it allows you to meet and connect with different people from all walks of life.

 

  1. Can you share with us what you feel has been the most valuable part in your career development to date, that has enabled you to get to where you are today?

I’ve been very lucky throughout my career as I have crossed paths with genuine, entrepreneurial and creative leaders that have gone out of their way to take me under their wing and share their vision and knowledge. The one who played a major role in my career, was Christophe Vielle, the CEO and Co-Founder of GCP Hospitality.

After meeting, we worked together to create and launch the Pullman Brand Flagship Hotel – Pullman Bangkok King Power. Inspired by his ways, I then followed him to open GCP Hospitality. His strong hands-on leadership gave me the opportunity to think out-of-the box, be pro-active and have an entrepreneurial mind-set when it comes to creating, developing and eventually launching.

Another valuable part in my career development has been the ability to travel with my work. For the past six years, I would say I have spent 70% of the time travelling for business purposes. This has had a very positive impact on my journey as it allowed me to become acquainted with different cultures, which strongly contributed to my creativity and self-development.

 

  1. Congratulations on reaching the finalist stage of The Hotelier Awards 2017. How are you planning on leveraging this opportunity to inspire the younger generation to work harder at developing their career in the hospitality scene?

I look forward to continuing to offer our management training program that we implement every year, which focuses on the younger generation in the area of marketing. It gives them an insight into the hospitality industry as well as future opportunities.

Empowering the younger generation is of the utmost importance to me. I would love to inspire them by sharing experiences, and providing them with the right tools to allow them to be overachievers. One of my favourite quotes that has helped me and one that I believe will encourage future hoteliers on their journeys is: “If the world puts you on a path that you don’t like, if you don’t like the destination that you’re offered when you look forward and you do not want to return to your starting point, use the beaten track and build a new path” – Maya Angelou.
