Interview with Rene Mayer – The 2016 Sales Hotelier Winner for ASEAN

What can you tell us about your journey from an applicant to a Sales Hotelier Winner of The Hotelier Awards 2016?

Fairmont Sanur Beach Bali participated in the awards for the very first time. We thought it was a great platform and opportunity to recognise our team for their achievements. Each entrant sent an application with the support of their team, peers and supervisor. From the submission phase, right up to the final phases, the Hotelier Awards provided a smooth and professional application process. The announcement of the winners was highly anticipated, as it was not revealed before the gala event. The ceremony was magnificent; we felt like we were at the international movie awards. When my name was announced as The Sales Hotelier winner of the year for ASEAN, I was really happy and proud of my entire sales and marketing team at Fairmont Sanur Beach, Bali.

What response have you and your hotel received after winning the title of Sales Hotelier of the year 2016 for ASEAN?

Our customers and colleagues were elated to hear about the achievement, and we received many congratulatory notes, emails and phone calls. We received national, regional and international coverage throughout media sources, including two major English-speaking newspapers in Indonesia, Jakarta Post and Jakarta Globe. 2016 was a great success for our team as we worked very hard the entire year, this award brought us to another level of recognition amongst the Asian hotel industry. It is a fantastic platform in the industry to share and celebrate success stories.

What Advice can you give to future applicants for The Hotelier Awards 2017?

My advice to other hotels is to enrol as many of their team members, as it is important to motivate and encourage them. I am sure each hotel has a lot of potential colleagues that are eligible for this award and often they don’t feel confident enough to go forward with the application, this is when the higher management team’s role comes in. In our case, our General Manager, Niall Cowan, was actively motivated and he encouraged each one of us to participate by sending all the necessary information to colleagues, so that they knew what the awards were all about. The management also convinced each one of us that the great results from 2016 should be celebrated by recognising a job well done. Recognition is extremely valuable in driving individual performance; it helps them to be goal oriented. Not only does recognition have a positive impact on our colleagues, but it also has a profound impact on important business measures.
