The BMW Hotelier Awards had the pleasure of sitting down with Gomi Suppiah, The Regional Director of Brand Performances Support from Hilton, Greater China Mongolia office in Shanghai. It was an honour to be able to speak to her about reaching the finalist stage for the Corporate Hotelier of the Year. We gained some fantastic insights on her values and how her family has been a great influence on her career so far.
Can you give us a brief insight into your education and career path?
I was born in Kuala Lumpur and went through a local school ran by Irish nuns. When I finished school, I wanted to do a hotel course in Switzerland but my mum said “no! It’s too expensive. You need to do something locally!” Not giving up on my dream, I decided to pursue an education where its understanding could be transferred to hotels, so I opted for Marketing, Advertising and Public Relations. Once I graduated, I decided to join a hotel as a telephone operator to get my foot into the hotel industry. I did that for three years until my mum said my elbows were getting chaffed and she wanted to me to change roles. As nothing was available in the hotel that I was based in, a friend who had recently moved to the Hilton in Shanghai asked me if I would be interested in a job there in Reservations. I went to pursue the reservations role in 1990 and have not looked back since then!
Can you share with us what you feel has been the most valuable part in your career development to date that has enabled you to get to where you are today?
The most valuable part of my careers development is the opportunity to learn, engage and to train and get trained! I have not stopped learning, whether it’s in brand initiatives or personal development. These opportunities have continued to be my drive to stay with Hilton. I find myself constantly engaged from the support of the senior leadership team here in the Shanghai office, as well as those from around the world including Singapore and McLean. I am celebrating my 26th year with the company and I am still developing and learning new things! They truly are awesome!
Congratulations on being a finalist in The BMW Hotelier Awards 2016. How are you planning on leveraging this opportunity to inspire the younger generation to work harder at developing their career in the hospitality scene?
I would like to tell the younger generation that nothing is impossible. I hope this would inspire many hoteliers throughout the region, that they too can do it! I already have the opportunity to be an influence in my current role and this accolade will continue to spur me to inspire and work with the teams here to achieve their dreams!
